  • March 2016: Egypt labeled Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

In April 2009, Egyptian officials announced the arrest of a group with alleged ties to Hezbollah and accused the detainees of plotting terrorism operations in Egypt and planning to spread Shiite thought in the predominantly-Sunni country. Shortly thereafter, Egyptian officials and politicians began referring to Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. However, it is unclear if this resulted in an official designation of the group by Cairo or if any such action survived the downfall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Egypt joined in the Arab League’s March 2016 decision to label Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. However, as recently as November 2017, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi has said that Egypt was not considering taking any measures against Hezbollah, despite Saudi Arabian calls for sanctions against the group.
