Israel

April 11, 1996: Israel listed Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

Israel has been in conflict with Hezbollah since the organization’s official founding in 1982. In fact, despite Hezbollah’s extensive list of enemies, it has slated Israel alone for destruction.
By the time Israel proscribed Hezbollah on June 22, 1989, the group had conducted a series of attacks against Israeli troops operating in Lebanon, starting with the
November 11, 1982, bombing of the Israeli military command post in Tyre, which killed 75 Israelis and up to 27 Lebanese and Palestinian detainees. Hezbollah’s attacks, including several suicide bombings, continued against Israeli forces throughout the 1980s.

It’s unclear what prompted the Israelis to choose June of 1989 to proscribe Hezbollah rather than any prior date. The listing coincided with Israel proscribing Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
